Americans consume roughly twice the recommended limit of salt each day! Diets high in salt lead to increased blood pressure, and high blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attacks and stroke, causing more than 800,000 deaths nationwide each year.
Adults should consume less than 2,300mg of sodium a day. High risk adults including, those over 51, African Americans, and those with hypertension, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease are recommended to consume less than 1,500mg per day!!
The goal of the NSRI is to reduce Americans' salt intake by 20 percent over five years, which will save lives and billions of dollars in health care costs. They intend on doing this by partnering with packaged goods companies and restaurants who commit to reducing their products sodium content. The initiative has developed specific target guidelines to help companies reduce sodium across 62 categories.
