Soy Allergies

Soyanara

Soy is one of the top eight most common food allergens. The prevalence of soy allergies is higher in children compared to adults. Soy allergies affect approximately 0.4% of the population.

The good news is that one recent study showed that 50% of children outgrow their soy allergy by age 7[1]. However, if you are an adult or child with a soy allergy, some of the many ingredients which contain soy may be hidden in your food. Some of these ingredients are: soy beans, soy sauce, soy protein, vegetable protein, edamame, miso, natto, tempeh, tofu, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, canned chicken broth, gum, starch vegetable broth, bouillon cubes and flavorings.

No Soybeans

Fortunately, Black Bear has over 90 pork, beef, turkey, Italian and lunchmeat varieties which do not contain soy! All Black Bear condiments and artisan cheeses are also soy free. Please see the table attached which contain "Soy Free" Black Bear deli.

Soy Beans

The 2004 Food Allergy Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA) allows companies like Black Bear to provide the ingredient label to say "may contain soy".

Black Bear wants you to be aware that it uses Isolated Soy Protein in about a dozen of their deli meats. Isolated Soy proteins are found in Black Bear Frankfurters, Cooked Salami, Deluxe Loaf, Pepper Loaf and the chicken breast varieties.

Soy Lecithin is an antioxidant, emulsifier and emollient it is actually the residue left after making soybean oil. Soy Lecithin is found in Black Bear Brown Sugar and Molasses Ham.

If you have a soy allergy- read the ingredient lists for soy containing ingredients. And know Black Bear has cheeses, condiments and over 90 deli varieties which are soy free.
